Video Games and Social Media
Video Games and Social Media
where does social media fit in with gaming? How are sites like Facebook and Twitter changing the way we play games? How is mobile gaming altering the way we spend our free time? How is constant accessibility to online gaming changing a society that is always “plugged in?”
While console and PC gaming were once associated with lonely nerds playing in their parents’ basement, social media sites are changing the video game industry. In July, Mashable reported that 64% of downloaded apps on Smartphones were games. Facebook also recently reported that 53% of its users played games like the ultra-popular Farmville on the site. These “casual” gamers were also spending significant amounts of money on the games that they downloaded. Zynga, Farmville’s creator, is rumored to bring in revenue of nearly $1 million a day.
